Topeka is the capital of Kansas. The current estimated population is 127,679. In the 1840s settlers travelling west along the Oregon Trail established a ferry service that would allow travelers to cross the Kansas River. This crossing took place at what is now Topeka and for many years was the only location where travelers could safely cross the Kansas River. A popular trade route was established through the area and the settlement of Topeka was established in 1854. Topeka quickly became a trade hub for meat, lumber, potatoes, corn and wheat. The settlement was officially incorporated as a city in 1857 and became the state capital after Kansas was admitted to the Union in 1861. Many people in the city were strongly anti-slavery and Topeka played an integral role in the Underground Railroad. In the 1950s, Topeka gained national attention when a local father sued the Board of Education for not allowing his daughter to attend a “white school” close to their home. The court case was known as Brown v. Board of Education and led to the integration of schools nationwide. There is now a National Historic Site in Topeka honoring the historic court case. As the state capital, Topeka’s main economic sector has long been state government. Education, health care and retail are also important sectors of Topeka’s economy today. Popular attractions in the city include many museums and parks.

Crime rates in Topeka are a bit above average. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 18. The rate of violent crime in Topeka is 5 per one thousand residents. Property crime occurs more frequently than violent crime. The chance of becoming a victim of a property crime such as theft, burglary or vandalism is 1 in 19. In 2013 there were 4,679 reported cases of theft and 1,238 cases of burglary. These numbers are above average for a city of Topeka’s size. Residents can protect themselves from these crimes by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses.
