Charleston is the capital of West Virginia. It is also the most populous city in the state, with a current estimated population of 50,821. Charleston was established as Fort Lee in 1787 by the Virginia Rangers. A small settlement was created around the fort and Charleston was officially established in 1794. The discovery of salt brines along the Kanawha River brought great economic growth to the city in the early 19th century. Coal was discovered in 1817 allowing the city to continue to flourish. During the Civil War Charleston was divided between Union and Confederate sympathizers. The Battle of Charleston was fought in 1862, resulting in a confederate victory. Union forces retook the city a short time later. After West Virginia was admitted as a state, Charleston was made the state capital. Today the regions natural resources still sustain Charleston’s economy. The main economic sectors in the city are mining, gas, finance and manufacturing. As the state capital, the state government also provides many local jobs. Charleston has about 50 locations on the National Register of Historic Places as well as many museums and parks.

Crime rates in Charleston are high. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 15. While violent crime rates are a bit above average, the real issue is property crime.
