Charleston is the capital of West Virginia. It is also the most populous city in the state, with a current estimated population of 50,821. Charleston was established as Fort Lee in 1787 by the Virginia Rangers. A small settlement was created around the fort and Charleston was officially established in 1794. As the state capital, the state government also provides many local jobs. Charleston has about 50 locations on the National Register of Historic Places as well as many museums and parks.
