The settlement’s name was changed to Waterbury and was officially admitted as a town in the Connecticut Colony in 1686. Growth was slow in Waterbury due to a lack of farmable land. With the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, Waterbury became a center for brass manufacturing. Waterbury brass was used in the Boulder Dam and the minting for nickels and South American coins. Waterbury was incorporated as a city in 1853. The clock industry also became a dominant industry in the 19th century. When the manufacturing industry declined in the 20th century, Waterbury’s economy took a hit and in 2008 Forbes named the city as one of the worst places for business. Today the top employers in Waterbury are the city government, Waterbury Hospital and the state government. Several landmarks honor the city’s history as a center for brass and clock manufacturing including the Timexpo Museum and the Brass Mill Center.
