Washington is a state on the Pacific coast of the United States. It was admitted to the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state. The current estimated population is 6,971,406. Settlement of the area began in the 18th century by Spanish and British explorers and later by the newly created United States. Spain ceded their territory in 1819 and Britain ceded the territory to the US in the Oregon Treaty of 1846. At the time, the fur trade dominated the region and many emigrants came to the region via the Oregon Trail. After Washington became a state the major industries became agriculture and lumber. During both World Wars Seattle and the Puget Sound became areas for shipbuilding and heavy industry. Boeing was founded in Seattle in 1916 and contributed greatly to the state’s manufacturing industry. Today Boeing remains an important part of the state’s economy as does computer software development, telecommunications, lumber and retail. The state is home to such high profile companies as Microsoft, Amazon.com, T-Mobile USA, Starbucks and Nordstrom. Agriculture is also an important industry in Washington and the state is known for its production of apples. Washington also has the second highest production of wine behind only California. Tourism also contributes to the state economy with visitors coming to the famed Pike Place Market and Space Needle in Seattle as well as taking in the many outdoor activities which including hiking, kayaking, camping and skiing. There are also many students who come to the state to attend one of the 40 institutions of higher education.

The rate of property crime for the state overall is lower than the national average however the rate of property crime is above the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in the state is 1 in 338 and of property crime is 1 in 27. The rate of violent crime increased by .1 percent between 2011 and 2012 and property crime increased 2.2 percent during the same period. One Washington city, Sammamish, made it onto the list of safest cities in the country. No Washington cities are considered to be amongst the most dangerous in the country. Property crime does seem to be an increasing issue in the state. Property crime includes theft, burglary and vandalism. These crimes can be prevented by installing surveillance systems in homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without.
