Washington, D.C., or the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States. The current estimated population is 658,893. The idea for establishing a national capital for the federal government was first put forth in the Federalist Papers by James Madison in 1788. He argued that the federal government should not rely on any state for security and maintenance. In 1790 Congress passed the Residence Act which approved the creation of a national capital. President George Washington selected the location of the new capital. The land was donated by Maryland and Virginia and measures 100 square miles. The capital city was named after President George Washington and the district was named Columbia which was a poetic name for the US that was used at that time. In 1801 Congress passed the Organic Act which placed the District under the sole control of the federal government. This act means that residents of the District are not considered residents of Maryland or Virginia and therefore do not have any representation in Congress. In 1846 the Virginia General Assembly voted for retrocession which would mean taking back the land they donated for the capital. Congress agreed and returned the land that had been donated by Virginia, thus reducing the size of the capital and now only using the land that had been donated by Maryland. The capital’s population increased rapidly at the end of the 19th century and the city began to undergo projects to beautify its streets and buildings. The federal government remains the largest employer in Washington, D.C. to this today. The second largest employer is tourism with millions of tourists coming to the capital every year from around the world. There are many national monuments, historic sites and museums throughout Washington, D.C. including the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House.
