Illinois is a state in the Midwest of the United States. The area was ceded to the US in 1783 and incorporated as a state in 1818. The rich prairie land and trade brought by the Erie Canal helped Illinois to grow and today the population is estimated to be 12,882,135. The state capital is Springfield and the most populous city is Chicago. Illinois is a top agricultural producer and is one of the largest producers of soybeans, corn and ethanol. The economy of Illinois has begun turning towards financial trading, law, logistics and medicine. Three US Presidents were elected out of Illinois and it was the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln which is why the state slogan is “Land of Lincoln.” The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield is the most popular presidential library. Illinois has many other historical and art museums throughout the state with the highest concentration being in Chicago. All major sports leagues have teams in Chicago including the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks. There are five first tier universities in the state: University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Loyola University Chicago and Illinois Institute of Technology. In addition to these there are many other accredited public and private colleges throughout the state.

The overall crime rate in the state of Illinois is about average. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 39 and of a violent crime is 1 in 241. The majority of crime takes place in the Chicago-metropolitan area. It is safer than other populous states like California and Texas but not as safe as states like New York and Pennsylvania. Crime rates have been steadily decreasing over the past 10 years and Illinois has more law enforcement employees than the national average. The high concentration of law enforcement is an important factor in the state’s safety and many law enforcement officials advocate the use of surveillance systems in homes and businesses. Surveillance systems are known to deter crime and aid police in apprehending criminals. They can be used in private residences, offices, farms, shopping malls and many other attractions. Safety is a top priority of any state and the residences can help achieve the low crime rate goal but installing surveillance systems on their property.
