Spokane is a city in the state of Washington. It is one of the largest cities in the state with a current estimated population of 210,721. Native Americans inhabited the land until fur trappers set up a trading post in 1810 along the Spokane River. After several battles between white settlers and the Native tribes, Spokane became available for more settlers. In 1881 the railway was brought to the area and Spokane was officially incorporated as a city. During the Gold Rush, Spokane became an important post for trading and supplies among miners. After a fire in 1889, Spokane experienced a building boom with many office buildings, banks and hotels being built. Mining declined in the early 20th century and agriculture and logging became the main industries in Spokane. Today manufacturing remains a leading industry. In addition to mining and forestry, Spokane has begun to diversify its economy into areas such as technology and health care. Recreation in the area includes several performing arts theaters, museums and parks.

Spokane suffers from increasingly high crime rates. Property crime increased 23% between 2011 and 2012 and increased again between 2012 and 2013. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 11. The rate of violent crime is not as high as property crime but is still higher than both the national and state averages. Much of the crime is centered in the downtown area of the city. In 2012 there were 12,600 reported cases of theft and 3,827 cases of burglary. Auto theft is also a big issue in the city with 2,095 reported cases in 2012. Residents of Spokane can protect themselves from these crimes by monitoring their property with surveillance systems. Homes and businesses with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without. Surveillance systems can be used in private residences, offices, museums and retail stores among many other locations.
