Racine is a city in Racine County, Wisconsin. The current estimated population is 78,199. The first Europeans to visit the area were French explorers who established a trading post and small settlement where the Root River empties into Lake Michigan. The settlement became known as Racine, French for “root.” More settlers arrived to the area from eastern states in 1834. Racine was incorporated as a village in 1841 and as a city in 1848. Manufacturing quickly became the dominant industry in the city with production facilities for J.I. Chase, S.C. Johnson, Reliance Controls and Arthur B. Modine, among others. Racine was also home to the inventions of malted milk in 1887 and the first garbage disposal in 1927. There about 40 buildings in Racine that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Norman Foster.
