College football is also popular in the state with many locals rooting for the Penn State Nittany Lions and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.

Crime in Pennsylvania is close to the national average with the crime rate being 19% lower than the national average in 2011. Property crime accounts for about 86% of the crime in the state which is about 21% lower than the national rate. However, the remaining 14% of violent crimes is about 3% higher than average. Pennsylvania is one of the top 15 lowest crime rate states. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in the state is 1 in 287 and of property crime is 1 in 46. Much of the state’s crime takes place in the Philadelphia area, although some other areas also experience high crime rates. Many residents in the state can use surveillance systems to protect their property.
