Mobile is a city in Alabama. The current estimated population is 194,899. Mobile was founded as the first capital of the French colony of Louisiana in 1702. Fort Conde was built in 1723 at the confluence of the Mobile River and Mobile Bay. The territory was ceded to the British at the end of the Seven Years’ War in 1763. Fort Conde was renamed Fort Charlotte and was captured by Spanish forces during the American Revolution. The fort remained under Spanish control until the War of 1812 when it was seized by United States forces. Mobile’s economy was built on the cotton trade and by 1840 it was the second largest exporter of cotton in the country. Many slaves were brought into the US through the port in Mobile. During the Civil War, Mobile fell to Union forces during the Battle of Mobile Bay. Like many southern cities, Mobile fell into an economic depression after the war. Beginning in the 20th century, manufacturing became a dominant industry, helping to revive the city’s economy. Shipbuilding and steel production provided several jobs and the population began to increase. Mobile provided several ships for US troops during World War I and II but when the war ended the shipbuilding industry began to decline. Paper and chemical industries replaced shipbuilding as the primary economic force. Aerospace, manufacturing and construction are the top industries in Mobile today. Many tourists visit the city’s historic battleships at the Battleship Memorial Park, a reconstruction of Fort Conde and several other historic structures that are spread throughout the city.

Mobile’s crime rate is a bit higher than average. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 17. While this rate is above average, it is not among the highest in the state. Violent crime is close to the state average with chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime being 1 in 162. Property crime rates are quite a bit higher. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 19, nearly twice the national average. Theft is the biggest crime issue facing Mobile. In 2012 there were 8,755 reported cases of theft and 2,796 cases of burglary. With such high rates of property crime, it is important that local residents protect themselves and their property. Criminals are less likely to target homes and businesses with surveillance systems than those without. Surveillance systems deter crime and help to create a safer environment overall.
