Video Surveillance Systems in Mississippi

Mississippi is a state in the Southern United States. The current estimated population is 2,994,079. The area was inhabited solely by Native American tribes such as the Chickasaw and Choctaw until French colonists established the first European settlement in 1699. The French established forts mostly along the Mississippi River. In 1763, France ceded the territory to the British after France’s defeat in the Seven Years’ War. The area came under US control in the American Revolution and the Mississippi Territory was organized in 1798. Many settlers migrated to the territory from other southern states, bringing many slaves with them. Mississippi became the 20th state in 1817. Many plantations were built and cotton production dominated the state’s economy. In 1861, Mississippi became the second state to secede from the Union at the onset of the Civil War. The Battle of Vicksburg in 1863 resulted in an important victory for the Union and the Confederate States soon surrendered. The Mississippi economy struggled after the war as many of the plantation owners were hugely dependant on cotton crops and slave labor. Many freed African-Americans moved into the Delta area and bought land for farming and lumber production. Despite being free, African-Americans were subjected to discrimination and Jim Crow laws throughout the state. Floods and boll weevil infestations caused problems for planters in the Delta and many African-American landowners were forced to give up their land. The economy continued to struggle throughout the 20th century as many residents left Mississippi for jobs in other states. The Bureau of Economic Analysis has reported that Mississippi has the lowest personal income of any state. The dependence on agriculture, the slow development of the Delta region and numerous natural disasters has all contributed to Mississippi’s poor economic status. Gambling was legalized along the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast in 1990, bringing new economic gains to the state. In 2012 Mississippi had the 6th largest gambling revenue in the US. In addition to the casinos, other popular attractions in the state include the birthplace of Elvis Presley and the Mississippi Blues Trail which has many historic sites that are significant to blues music.

The crime rate in Mississippi is about the same as the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in the state is 1 in 364 and of property crime is 1 in 37. Jackson is the only city in Mississippi to rank among the most dangerous in the nation and Madison is the only city to rank among the safest in the nation. Crime rates have been decreasing over the past several years. In 2013 the most common crimes were theft and burglary. There were 52,117 reported cases of theft and 24,995 cases of burglary in the state. Residents can protect themselves from these crimes by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems are known to deter crime and can help to create a safer environment overall. There are many affordable systems available that can be used to protect homes, offices, farms, schools and many other locations.
