Minnesota is a state in the Midwest United States. The current estimated population is 5,457,173. The land was originally inhabited by the Dakota people until French fur traders began arriving to the area in the 17th century. The land became part of the US under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Fort Snelling was built in 1819 near modern day Minneapolis and many settlers began coming to the area to build farms and cut timber. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state in 1858. Tensions rose between the native Dakota tribe and the white settlers, culminating in the Dakota War of 1862. The early economy was built on logging and farming. Flour mill companies such as General Mills rose to prominence in the late 19th century and by 1900 Minnesota was producing a large amount of the nation’s flour. While agriculture remained an important sector of Minnesota’s economy, industrial development drew people to the cities in the 20th century. Today the economy is more diverse and many companies have headquarters in the state including Target, 3M, General Mills, Hormel, Land O’Lakes, Best Buy and Valspar among others. Agriculture and iron ore mining remain dominant industries in Minnesota. Recreation activities in the state include museums, fishing and boating on the lakes and the most visited mall in the country, Mall of America. There are many colleges and universities in Minnesota including 32 institutions in the Minnesota State College and University system and 20 private universities.
