Madison is the capital of Wisconsin. It is also the second most populous city in the state with a current estimated population of 243,344. The area that would become Madison was first laid out by James Duane Doty in 1829. He named the land after President and Founding Father James Madison. In 1837 Madison was named as the capital of the Wisconsin Territory and was officially incorporated after Wisconsin became a state in 1848. Wisconsin was a free a state and as such it remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Camp Randall in Madison was used as a training camp and military hospital for Union soldiers. The University of Wisconsin- Madison opened in 1848 and has become the largest employer in the city. As the state capital, state government also remains a large employer in Madison. There is also a growing tech industry in the city that aids in the stability of the local economy. Madison is known for its low unemployment rate and is often ranked as one of the best cities for business. Popular attractions in the city include water sports on the lakes, art museums and several buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright who spent part of his childhood in Madison. Wright designed Monona Terrace which is a convention center on Lake Monona and a fixture of the Madison skyline.
