Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska. The current estimated population is 268,738. The area was first settled by a representative of the Crescent Salt Company who was visiting the salt flats in hopes of manufacturing the salt. Salt manufacturing never took off in the area but the settlement lasted. The settlement was named Lancaster after Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Today the University of Nebraska is one of the largest employers in the city and is home to some of the most popular museums and gardens in Lincoln. College sports are big in Lincoln and there are 22 teams in NCAA Division I sports.
