The railroad came to Hattiesburg that same year. With the railroad, Hattiesburg was able to transport lumber to the harbor and more than double its population. It gained the nickname of “Hub City” in 1912 because many rail lines and highways intersect in Hattiesburg. Camp Shelby was opened in 1917 and became an important part of the local economy. Today Coca-Cola and Pepsi both have facilities in the city as does Sunbeam and Kimberly Clark. Hattiesburg has many historic buildings including the Saenger Theater which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hattiesburg Train Depot was recently restored and now operates as a transportation center and a meeting and event venue.
