Duluth is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota. It is a seaport city on Lake Superior, along the border of Wisconsin. The current estimated population is 86,128. Like much of Minnesota, the area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes until French fur traders began exploring the region in the 17th century. The city is named for French explorer Daniel Greyson, Sieur du Lhut. In 1792 the North West Company began establishing trading posts along the shores of Lake Superior. Fur trade remained the dominant industry in the Lake Superior region until the 1840s. Iron ore and copper mining in the 1850s brought a rush of settlers to the region. Timber harvesting emerged as an important industry in 1857 and Duluth became an important port with access to the Atlantic Ocean. At the start of the 20th century, Duluth’s port handled more tonnage than Chicago or New York. US Steel opened a production facility in the city in 1915, bringing even more people to the city. The steel plant closed in 1981 and much of the manufacturing and mining industry declined sending Duluth into an economic downturn. Today the economy is focused on health care, retail and business services. The port remains an important transportation center for coal, steel and agricultural products. Tourism has also become a major component of Duluth’s economy and the city is home to the only all-freshwater aquarium in the country. The North Shore Scenic Drive along Lake Superior is a popular attraction for visitors and connects Duluth to popular fishing and camping destinations.

Crime rates in Duluth are about average to a bit above average. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 18. The rate of violent crime is about the same as the national average and a bit higher than the state average. Property crime occurs much more frequently and occurs at a rate that is about twice as high as the state average. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime in Duluth is 1 in 20. In 2012 there were 3,047 reported cases of theft and 642 cases of burglary. Residents can protect themselves from high property crime rates by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without and they can help to lower crime rates overall.
