Broken Arrow is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma. It is a large suburb with a current estimated population of 103,500. The area was originally home to the Creek Tribe as part of the Indian Territory. The name comes from the tribe’s original settlement in Alabama. The railroad came through the settlement in 1902 and Broken Arrow was officially incorporated in 1903. The economy was built largely on agriculture and many white settlers established farms in the city. When the highway was built and suburban flight began in the 1960s, Broken Arrow’s population began to grow rapidly. The city is largely a bedroom community as most residents commute to Tulsa for work. Manufacturing is perhaps the largest economic sector in Broken Arrow and the largest employers are FlightSafety International, Blue Bell Creameries and Windstream Communications. Northeastern State University has a campus in the city as does the Tulsa Technology Center.
