Augusta is the capital of Maine. The current estimated population is 18,946 which make it one of the smallest state capitals in the country. The area was first settled by English explorers in 1629. Conflicts between the Native American tribes and European settlers continued into the 18th century. Fort Western was built in the area in 1754 to protect settlers against attack. The fort still stands today. Augusta became the state capital in 1827 and was incorporated as a city in 1849. The designation of state capital initially brought a large influx of settlers but the population began to decline about a decade later. Agriculture, lumber and textile mills became the dominant industries in the 19th century. Many of those industries began to decline in the 20th century and old factories were converted into housing and commercial districts. Military is an important economic force in Augusta today and the city is home to the Maine National Guard. The University of Maine at Augusta is the city’s only college. Popular attractions in the city include the state house and museum as well as Fort Western which is the oldest wooden fort in the country.

Augusta has an above average crime rate. The chance of becoming a victim of any type of crime in the city is 1 in 14. The rate of violent crime is about the same as the national average but property crime is over two times higher than the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of a property crime is 1 in 15. Theft and burglary are big issues in Augusta. In 2013 there were 969 reported cases of theft and 206 burglaries. These numbers are quite high for a city with such a small population. Residents can protect themselves from these crimes and help to lower crime rates by installing surveillance systems on their property. Homes and businesses with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without. Surveillance systems help to create a safe environment and they are endorsed by law enforcement.
