Video Surveillance Systems in Wyoming

Wyoming is a state in the Western region of the United States. It is the 10th most extensive state but also the least populous state. The current estimated population is 584,153. The southwest region of what is now Wyoming was originally Spanish and later Mexican territory until 1848 when the land was ceded to the US. French Canadian fur trappers as well as many explorers began visiting the area in the late-18th century and many of their tales about the Yellowstone area were considered to be fictitious. The Wyoming Territory was officially established by the US government in 1868. Settlement of the new territory was slow but the government began sponsoring expeditions into the area, especially the Yellowstone region. These expeditions found that the tales of the early explorers were true and Yellowstone National Park was established as the first national park in 1872. Wyoming was an early pioneer for women’s rights as the first territory to give women the right to vote and later becoming the first state to elect a female governor. For these reasons, Wyoming has adopted the official motto “Equal Rights.” Wyoming was admitted to the Union as the 44th state in 1890. Passage of the Homestead Acts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led many cattle ranchers to established ranches throughout Wyoming. Many violent conflicts erupted between the ranchers, culminating in the Johnson County War of 1892. While cattle ranching does still contribute to the state’s economy today, the main drivers behind the economy is mineral production and tourism. About 50% of Wyoming’s land is national parks that attract millions of visitors every year. These parks include Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National park, Devil’s Town National Monument and Fossil Butte National Monument.

Crime rates in Wyoming are below national averages and the state is considered to be safe. Specifically, violent crimes such as murder and assault are below the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 488. Property crimes such as burglary and theft are much more common. The chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes is 1 in 45. In 2013 there were 10,276 reported cases of theft and 1,955 cases of burglary. It is not unusual to see high instances of property crime in states with large tourist populations. Residents and business owners in popular tourist destinations should install surveillance cameras on their property to deter theft and create a safer environment. Surveillance cameras can also be used to monitor shopping patterns, weather conditions and many other factors that are important for businesses.
