Worcester is a city in Worcester County, Massachusetts. It is the second most populous city in the state with an estimated population of 182,544. The region was inhabited by native tribes until 1674 when English settlers and traders began to inhabit the area. After struggles during the French and Indian War, Worcester was officially incorporated as a town in 1722. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was done by Isaiah Thomas in front of the Worcester town hall. After the American Revolution, Worcester began opening factories manufacturing shoes and textiles. The railroad reached the city in 1835 and brought many immigrants looking for work in the factories. Wire and machinery manufacturing began to take over in the mid 19th century. In the 20th century the manufacturing industry began to decline and the economy expanded into new areas such as biotechnology and healthcare. Top employers in the city today are UMass Memorial Health Care and University of Massachusetts Medical School. Worcester has the largest arts community in the state outside of Boston with many museums and performing arts venues.

Crime rates in Worcester are a bit above average. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 22. While property crime in the city has been steadily decreasing, violent crime has remained about the same. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 28 and of violent crime is 1 in 104. The violent crime rate is over twice as high as both the national and state averages. Worcester’s crime rates are higher than those of other large Massachusetts city, Boston. The two most common crimes are theft and burglary. In 2012 there were 3,927 reported cases of theft and 2,040 reported cases of burglary. Residents of Worcester can prevent these crimes and help to lower crime rates overall by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses. Surveillance systems are known to deter crime and footage can be used to help identify and apprehend criminals. Installing surveillance systems in homes, offices and businesses is a great way to make Worcester a safer city.
