Tulsa is a city in Oklahoma. The current estimated population is 398,121 and it is one of the most populous cities in the state. The land that is now known as Tulsa was once a part of the Indian Territory, a designated plot of land for Native American tribes that were forcibly removed from their land in the eastern United States. The Greenwood neighborhood became known as “Black Wall Street” for its prosperous African-American owned businesses. The US Highway 66 Association was established in Tulsa by Cyrus Avery in 1925. Tulsa became a popular rest stop on the route. The recession of the 1980s hit Tulsa’s oil industry hard and while the industry has since recovered, efforts have been put in place to diversify the city’s economy. Today there are sectors in aerospace, finance, technology and manufacturing. Tulsa also has an active arts community. The Philbrook Museum of Art, located in the former estate of oil pioneer Waite Phillips, is a popular art museum which also functions as a historic site and gardens. The city also has a public artwork program and several performance arts groups. There are 15 institutions of higher education in Tulsa. The University of Tulsa has a widely respected doctoral program and has been ranked as one of the best universities by Princeton Review.
