South Carolina is a state in along the Atlantic coast of the United States. The current estimated population is 4,832,482. The first European settlements in what is now South Carolina were made by the Spanish in the 16th century. Both Spanish and French explorers attempted to colonize the region until the British claimed the territory in 1629 and named the southern colonies Carolina. In 1729 Carolina split into two colonies, North Carolina and South Carolina. The fertility of the Low Country land allowed for rice and indigo cultivation. During the American Revolution, South Carolina was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation and the 8th state to ratify the US Constitution in 1788. In 1861 South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union at the onset of the Civil War. The state fell to Union forces in 1865. Racial tensions continued after the war and the state fell into an economic depression. In the 20th century, South Carolina diversified its economy to include agriculture, textiles, military and tourism. Major outputs of the state include tobacco, cattle, rice, paper products, machinery and automobiles. Today the service sector accounts for over 83% of South Carolina’s economy. There are several colleges and universities throughout the state including the University of South Carolina which maintains seven satellite campuses throughout the state. Tourists to the state are attracted to the beach resorts along the coast such as Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head as well as many national parks and museums.

In 2013 there were 119,511 reported cases of theft and 40,958 cases of burglary. Four South Carolina cities rank among the most dangerous in the nation: Sumter, Anderson, Spartanburg and Myrtle Beach. No South Carolina cities rank among the safest in the nation. Residents can protect themselves from crime and help to lower crime rates by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses.
