Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico. The current estimated population is 67,947. Santa Fe was the first European settlement in what is today New Mexico. It was established in 1607 and made the capital of the territory in 1610. In 1680 the Pueblo people drove Spanish settlers out of the region only to be conquered again in 1692. After the Mexican War of Independence the region came under Mexican control in 1821 and then US control in 1848. Throughout this time Santa Fe remained the capital of New Mexico. The city remained sparsely populated throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It became a hub for artists and archaeologists in the 20th century with many programs for study including the School of American Research. During World War II, Santa Fe was the site of a Japanese-American internment camp. The facility was permanently closed in 1946. The rich cultural history and desert landscape of Santa Fe continued to attract artists and tourists including such notable artists as Georgia O’Keefe and Eliot Porter. Today the city has many art and history museums including one dedicated solely to the work of Georgia O’Keefe. The city is also noted for its many historic adobe buildings.

The crime rate in Santa Fe is a bit above average. The chance of becoming a victim of any type of crime in the city is 1 in 20. While the rate of violent crime is below the state average, the rate of property crime is much higher. The chance of becoming a victim of a property crime such as theft, burglary or vandalism is 1 in 22. Burglary is an especially big issue for Santa Fe residents. In 2012 there were 1,907 reported cases of burglary and 1,816 cases of theft. Residents can protect themselves from these crimes by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses. Most burglaries occur in residential areas so it is vital that Santa Fe residents protect their homes. Surveillance systems are known to deter crime and they can help to lower crime rates overall.
