Setting up a Static IP Address on a Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

This how to guide will cover setting up a static IP address on a Mac OS X v10.10 Yosemite computer. It is very important to setup a static IP address if you are going to use port forwarding. With port forwarding setup your router forwards ports to a specified IP address. Anytime you restart your computer it may get a different IP address and the ports will no longer be forwarded to the originally specified IP address and the port forwarding configuration will not work. This is why you need a static IP address that will never change even after restarting your computer. We will now show you how to setup a static IP address.

Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen and then select “System Preferences.”

Step 2: In the “System Preferences” window select “Network” as shown in the picture.

Step 3: In the Network window the internet connection with the green dot will be already selected, because its the active connection. Click on the “Advanced” button to enter to the configuration menu.

Step 4: Select the tab TCP/IP and in the “Configure IPv4” drop down menu select “Manually.” The Subnet mask and Router fields should already be filled in. Input an IP address into the IP Address box. The IP address you choose should be very similar to the router’s IP address. Only the last number of the IP address should be different. For example, if the router’s IP address is, you might choose The IP address you choose should end with a number between 1 and 254, and should not be the same as the router’s IP address. Every device that connects to your network needs to have it’s own IP address.

You also need to enter the DNS servers that your computer should connect to. The easiest way to find out what DNS servers to use is to give your internet service provider a call. Just ask them what DNS servers you should be using, and they will most likely give you two IP addresses to type into the DNS Servers box on this page.

Your static IP address is now setup! If you find that you are unable to connect to the internet then return to the network configuration page and return everything to default settings.
