Hattiesburg is a city in Forrest County, Mississippi. It is one of the most populous cities in the state, with a current estimated population of 47,556. The area was inhabited by the Choctaw tribe until the land was ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Mount Dexter in 1805. The city was incorporated in 1884. The railroad came to Hattiesburg that same year. With the railroad, Hattiesburg was able to transport lumber to the harbor and more than double its population. It gained the nickname of “Hub City” in 1912 because many rail lines and highways intersect in Hattiesburg. Camp Shelby was opened in 1917 and became an important part of the local economy. Today Coca-Cola and Pepsi both have facilities in the city as does Sunbeam and Kimberly Clark. Hattiesburg has many historic buildings including the Saenger Theater which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hattiesburg Train Depot was recently restored and now operates as a transportation center and a meeting and event venue. The University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University are both based in Hattiesburg.
