Gulfport is a city on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. The current estimated population is 71,012 and it is the second most populous city in the state. Gulfport was founded in 1898 by the president of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad that connected inland lumber mills to the coast. Construction of the harbor was completed in 1902 and the Port of Gulfport became an active seaport and an important component of the city’s economy. The local newspaper, The Sun Herald, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina. In 1942 the Naval Construction Battalion Center was opened in Gulfport. It is a Navy base and the home of the Atlantic Fleet Seabees. Today the battalion center is the largest employer in Gulfport. Other large employers include Memorial Hospital, the school district and Island View Casino. Gambling along the Mississippi Coast is a popular tourist destination and attracts many visitors to Gulfport.
