Frankfort is the capital of Kentucky. The current estimated population is 25,527. Frankfort was established in 1786 when James Wilkinson purchased the land north of the Kentucky River. The town was named the capital of Kentucky in 1792 and incorporated as a city in 1835. Stagg Distillery. It became listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It is one of the oldest continuously-operating distilleries in the United States. Famed pioneer Daniel Boone is buried in Frankfort Cemetery, along with his wife. Frankfort has one university, Kentucky State University, and two school districts.
