Columbia is the capital of South Carolina. It also has the largest population in the state at 133,358. The area was first explored by Spanish settlers in 1540. The Carolinas eventually came under British control and was seized by the United States during the American Revolution. Columbia was created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1786 and named as the new state capital. It wasn’t until 1854 that Columbia was officially incorporated as a city. Columbia’s economy grew with the building of the Santee Canal which connected the city to Charleston in 1800. The University of South Carolina was established in 1801 drawing many students and contributing to the city’s economy. In 1840 the railroad reached Columbia bringing further economic expansion. Like most of the South, Columbia’s economy was largely based on cotton and slave labor. During the Civil War much of Columbia was destroyed in fires set by Union troops. Many remnants of the structures that were burned by Union troops remain today and operate as tourist attractions. After the war Columbia began to recover and by 1907 the city emerged as a major textile manufacturing center with six mills in operation. Fort Jackson was built in the city in 1917 and provides basic combat training for US troops. After suffering from racial segregation for many years, Columbia began to repeal many Jim Crow laws in the 1960s and in 1963 the University of South Carolina admitted its first black students. Today the University remains a fixture of Columbia’s culture and one of the largest employers in the city. Other large employers include the South Carolina state government, Palmetto Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina. There are many historic sites and museums that celebrate history including the South Carolina State Museum which is one of the largest museums in the southeast United States.

Crime rates in Columbia are high. The chance of becoming a victim of any type of crime in the city is 1 in 14. While violent crime rates are above both national and state averages, they are not quite as high as property crime rates. Property crime occurs at a rate that is more than two times higher than the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime in Columbia is 1 in 16. In 2013 there were 5,800 reported cases of theft and 1,398 cases of burglary. These numbers are high for a city of Columbia’s size. Residents can combat these high crime rates by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses.
