Wilmington is a city in New Castle County, Delaware. It is the most populous city in the state, with a current estimated population of 70,851. Wilmington was originally known as Fort Christina, a Swedish settlement established in 1638. It was the first Swedish settlement in North America. The fort was named after the adjacent river which was named after the Princess of Sweden. In 1655 the Dutch gained control of the region and Fort Christina became part of New Netherland. When the British arrived in 1664, many battles ensued between Dutch and British forces until the British were victorious and the region came under British rule. The settlement was renamed Wilmington after the Earl of Wilmington. The DuPont gunpowder mill opened just outside Wilmington in 1800 and quickly became a large employer and lynchpin of the Wilmington economy. Throughout the 19th century, Wilmington became a large producer of iron ships, gunpowder and leather. Wilmington was officially incorporated as a city in 1832. The largest employers in the city today are the state government, Christiana Care Health System and DuPont. Visitors to the city enjoy the riverfront area as well as many historic sites.
