Tulsa became a popular rest stop on the route. The recession of the 1980s hit Tulsa’s oil industry hard and while the industry has since recovered, efforts have been put in place to diversify the city’s economy. Today there are sectors in aerospace, finance, technology and manufacturing. Tulsa also has an active arts community. The Philbrook Museum of Art, located in the former estate of oil pioneer Waite Phillips, is a popular art museum which also functions as a historic site and gardens.
