Lawton is a city in Comanche County, Oklahoma. The current estimated population is 97,151. The land was originally part of the Indian Territory and was inhabited by Choctaw, Chickasaw, Comanche, Kiowa and Apache tribes. In 1869 Fort Sill was established as an attempt to stop Native American tribes from leading raids into Texas. In 1901 the federal government opened the land for white settlement. Lawton was established and named for Henry W. Lawton, a Major General at Fort Sill. The city’s population grew steadily over the next several decades. Fort Sill has grown to become the largest employer in Lawton. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is also a large employer. Major economic sectors in Lawton include manufacturing, government and retail. There are three museums in Lawton: Museum of the Great Plains, Fort Sill Museum and the Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center. Cameron University is the only university in the city and the largest state-funded university in southwest Oklahoma.
