Laramie is a city in Albany County, Wyoming. It is one of the most populous cities in the state, with a current estimated population of 31,681. Laramie was founded in 1868 when crews built a railroad line through the area. The new town was named for the French Canadian fur trapper, Jacques LaRamie, who went missing in the area in the 1820s. The first woman to cast a legal vote in the United States did so in Laramie in 1870. Many railroads were based in Laramie and the railroad became an important part of the town’s economy. The University of Wyoming was established in Laramie in 1886 drawing many students and new residents to the town. Laramie garnered worldwide attention in 1998 when openly gay student Matthew Shepard was murdered. The events were documented in The Laramie Project and played a significant role in passing federal hate crimes legislation, although Wyoming itself does not have any hate crimes laws. Laramie is also known for its many parks and scenic trails. The city draws many outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
