Kenosha is a city on the shore of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. The current estimated population is 101,230. The area was inhabited by Native American tribes until 1835 when the Western Emigration Company from New York bought land and began building homes. The area quickly became an important port, giving the town the name of Southport in 1837. The official name of Kenosha was adopted in 1850. In the 20th century automobile manufacturing became the dominant industry in Kenosha with companies like Rambler, Hudson and American Motors Corporation all producing automobiles in the city. The automotive industry in Kenosha declined in the 1980s and the American Motors Corporation closed its facility in 1990. Today most residents commute out of the city to Chicago or Milwaukee for work. The largest employer in the city is the public school system. Tourism is also an important part of Kenosha’s economy with an estimated $224 million in revenue coming from tourism each year. Visitors to the city enjoy the beaches along Lake Michigan, the many public museums and 21 locations on the National Register of Historic Places.
