Iowa is a state in the Midwest United States. The current estimated population is 3,107,126. French Canadian explorers were the first Europeans to visit the area. The territory that is now Iowa was claimed by the French in the 17th century. It became part of the Louisiana Territory and many French, Spanish and British traders established trading posts along the Mississippi River. In 1763 France gave control of the territory to Spain. In 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte took the Louisiana Territory back from Spain and sold it to the US in 1803. During the War of 1812, control over the territory was threatened by the British but the US was able to maintain control. Throughout the 19th century Native American tribes were forced out of the Iowa Territory and moved west. The first US settlers began arriving to the territory in 1833. In 1846 Iowa was admitted as the 29th state. The first Iowa State Fair was held in 1854 and quickly became a popular tradition that is still celebrated today. Iowa sided with the Union during the Civil War and the state was a large supporter of Abraham Lincoln. After the war, Iowa became a major agricultural producer. In the 20th century, the economy began to diversify and manufacturing emerged as an important industry. Today the state’s economy is strong with sectors in manufacturing, agriculture, finance and technology. Iowa is the largest producer of ethanol and corn in the country. College sports are important in Iowa, with four NCAA Division I college teams. President Herbert Hoover was from Iowa and his Presidential Library is in West Branch. Other popular attractions in the state include the Amana Colonies which is a historic landmark of settlements of German Pietists, amusement park Adeventureland and many museums and theaters.
