Idaho is a state in the Northwest United States. The current estimated population is 1,634,464 and the capital and most populous city is Boise. What is now Idaho was once part of the Oregon Territory until 1849 when it was reorganized into the Washington Territory. Idaho was organized into its own territory in 1863. Many Mormons migrated from the Utah region and settled in Idaho, establishing a large Mormon presence that remains in the state today. The early economy of Idaho was based mostly on the mining of metals and natural resources. Every known type of gemstone can be found in Idaho, lending it the nickname of “The Gem State.” Idaho was admitted to the Union in 1890 as the 43rd state. Agriculture, forest products and tourism became important industries to the state in the 20th century. The Great Depression hit the state hard and Idaho began attempts to diversify its economy to include science and technology. The agricultural industry has rebounded and Idaho is known as the “Potato State” due to the fact that it produces nearly one-third of the potatoes in the US. Food processing, manufacturing and mining are also important sectors of Idaho’s economy. Technology is the state’s largest industry. The state exports memory chips, printers, semiconductors and other digital products. Tourism is also an important sector of the Idaho economy with tourists visiting the state’s many state and national parks. Idaho is also home to one of the oldest ski resorts in the country, Sun Valley.
