Grand Island is a city in Hall County, Nebraska. The current estimated population is 50,550. French fur traders were the first Europeans to visit the area but the first major settlement was established by German settlers from Iowa in 1857. In the 1860s surveyors from the Union Pacific Railroad laid out the town of Grand Island. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area and the town was officially incorporated in 1872. Sugar beets became the dominant crop in the region and the first sugar beet processing factory in the country was located in Grand Island. The Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant produced bombs starting during World War II until 1973. Contaminated water and products from the plant were buried underground causing widespread contamination of the water supply. Today Grand Island is home to the Nebraska State Fair and is a hub for shopping. The Conestoga Mall and the downtown area are popular shopping destinations for residents of central Nebraska.
