Fort Wayne is a city in Allen County, Indiana. It is the second largest city in the state with a current estimated population of 256,496. Fort Wayne was built by the United States Army in 1794 after winning battles fought against the Miami Tribe that inhabited the area. The Fort was named after General Anthony Wayne who led troops to victory in the battle against the Miami Tribe. Some of the largest employers in the city are Parkview Health System, Fort Wayne Community Schools and General Motors. The city also has many museums and attractions for residents and visitors including the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo which is considered to be one of the best zoos in the country. There are three rivers that converge in Fort Wayne: St Mary’s, St Joseph and Maumee. The rivers offer canoeing, paddle boarding and kayaking as well as many scenic parks along the shores.
