Video Surveillance Systems in California

California is the 3rd largest state in the United States and has the largest population of any state in the US with a total of 38 million people. California was ceded to the US in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. The California Gold Rush quickly followed bringing an economic boom and large-scale immigration to the state. Tourists from around the world are drawn to many of California’s beautiful vistas, from the mountains to the beaches, from the Golden Gate Bridge to Hollywood. There are many attractions throughout California that draw visitors and immigrants such as Disneyland, Sea World, Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite National Park and many other attractions. The largest cities in the state are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Fresno. These cities, as well as the rest of the state, are very diverse, with over 200 languages known to be spoken and read. Not only is the population diverse but so is the landscape, with people living in large cities, suburbs and rural farming communities.

Crime rates in California have been declining over the past several years. In 2013 there were a total of 151,634 violent crimes and 1,018,333 property crimes reported throughout the state. These rates are about average compared to the rest of the nation, meaning California is not one of the safest states nor is it one of the most dangerous. The smallest county in California, Alpine County, has the highest crime rate and San Joaquin County, a much larger county, had the second highest crime rate in the state. Orange County has the lowest crime rate of any county with a population over 1,000,000 and Modoc County had the lowest rate for counties with populations under 1,000,000. Cities with a dense population or large number of visitors usually have higher crime rates. Many residents and businesses throughout the state use surveillance systems to protect from theft, vandalism or worse. Due to the diversity of California, we see video surveillance systems being used in a variety of settings. Many farmers use them to monitor their cattle across large areas, theme parks and shopping centers use them to protect guests and locate lost children, small businesses use them to prevent theft and vandalism and private residents use them to prevent burglary and to monitor their homes when they are away. Whatever the location may be surveillance systems can help to monitor property and protect from a wide variety of crimes. Often, cities with the most up to date surveillance systems have the lowest crime rates.
