In 1863 John Bozeman opened the Bozeman Trail which was a northern trail leading from the Oregon Trail to the mining town of Virginia City. Shortly after that, John Bozeman platted the town of Bozeman along the trail. Bozeman Trail was closed in 1868 but the town remained. The railroad reached the area in 1883 and the town of Bozeman grew rapidly.
