Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana. It is also the second most populous city in the state with a current estimated population of 229,426. French explorers first discovered the area in 1699 as they came up the Mississippi River. A permanent settlement was established in 1719 as a military post. French-Canadian settlers began arriving to the area in 1755 as they were driven from Acadia by British forces. The economy grew based on trade and transportation along the river. The city was officially incorporated in 1817 and named as the state capital in 1849. Economic growth was halted after the Civil War until the 1950s when the city experienced a boom in the petrochemical industry. Baton Rouge experienced a population boom in 2005 as residents fled the Katrina devastated areas in south Louisiana. Today the petrochemical industry remains dominant in the city’s economy and the ExxonMobil facility in Baton Rouge is one of the largest oil refineries in the world. Baton Rouge also remains an important port of trade along the Mississippi River. Some of the largest employers in the city include the state government and Louisiana State University. Tourists are drawn to the city to visit the historic plantations, museums and to enjoy the unique blend of Cajun and Creole cultures.

Baton Rouge has one of the highest crime rates in the state. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 16. This is higher than both the national and state averages. Violent crime rates are more than two times higher than the state average. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime is 1 in 105. Residents are more likely to become victims of property crimes such as theft, burglary and vandalism. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 19. In 2013 there were 7,648 reported cases of theft and 3,264 cases of burglary. Residents can protect themselves from these crimes by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without and they can help to reduce crime rates overall.
