Aurora is a suburban city outside Denver, Colorado. The current estimated population is 345,803, making it one of the most populous cities in the state of Colorado. Aurora was originally laid out as the town of Fletcher by businessman Donald Fletcher in 1891. The entire state experienced an economic depression after the Silver Crash of 1893 and Donald Fletcher fled the state. Residents changed the town’s name to Aurora in 1907 and it was officially incorporated as a city in 1929. Aurora’s growth was slow at first as many emigrants chose to settle in the larger neighboring city of Denver. After World War II mass suburbanization began to sweep the nation and Aurora experienced a population boom as people moved out of Denver to the outlying suburbs. The United States military developed a large presence in Aurora, opening the Fitzsimons Army Hospital and Lowry Air Force Base during World War II and later opening the Buckley Air Force Base which has become the largest employer in the city. In addition to military, health care and education are Aurora’s largest industries. The city maintains many parks including the Plains Conservation Center which operates educational programs.
